社会评论的调性在谣曲中通常十分尖锐,但在这首诗里却显得有些弱化,虽说还能分辨出来。它似乎是服从此诗的心理主题的。诗人十分明智地让一位“工匠”(workman),而非那位路过此地、冷嘲热讽的城里人来道出最后一节中那沉重可怕的洞察。因为,文学中充满危机的良知感通常都是知识阶层的财产。而在这里,却由这位粗俗的、近乎庶民的“工匠”出面表达了哈代所有诗歌中最恐怖、最悲剧的道白。
尽管这里的句法相当清晰,韵律一致,心理发展也很有力,但此诗的质感却因为其三重韵而削弱了诗中的思想内容——不论是从故事线索还是从韵脚自身的品质来看(尤其是后者),这样的三重韵都毫无存在的理由。简而言之,这首诗写得很专业,却不十分出色。我们得到了此诗的矢量,而非其目标。但就人类心灵的真理而言,这一矢量也许就足够了。我们可以想象,诗人在这首诗里以及其他许多情况下对自己正是这么说的。因为,“目不转睛地直面糟糕”会让你对自己的面貌一无所知。
